John 13:31-35 You Are Followers of Jesus

This morning we have 2 biblical concepts to wrestle with, glory and love. both glory and love carries a different weight outside these walls. It's important that we clearly understand what Jesus is talking about in our Gospel lesson, for it inspires us to continue to follow Jesus. His love for you is glorious. His love is shown through us.

Acts 5:12,17-32 The Holy Spirit Backs the Resurrection's Call to Repentence

When you think of a Biblical preacher that preaches a call to repentance, which Biblical preacher comes to mind? we think of John the Baptist preaching, “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near!” In our Gospel lesson, the week after Easter, Jesus is doing the same thing John did, calling Thomas to repentance. The message of the Resurrected Savior is also a call to repentance. This morning as we look at Acts, see how the Holy Spirit does indeed back the messengers of the Resurrection. The Resurrections call to repentance continues to be proclaimed.

1 Corinthians 10:1-13 Don't Be Fooled, God is still God

Since 1970's Christians serious about what God says in his word have been standing up to choose life over death. Christian serious about God's word have stood up for those living in their mothers wombs. Life is life, no matter if it is in a mother's womb or on the hospital bed. However, there are some very heavy emotional arguments that are used to justify murder, whether that be at the beginning of life or the end. We have a wonderful word of God, which encourages us just as it encouraged the Corinthians to not be fooled by emotional arguments. God is still God. God still responds to sin. Despite evidence to the contrary, he hasn't grown lax. Because God still responds to sin, he also provides a way out.

Philippians 3:17-4:1 Stand Firm Against the Enemies of the Cross

Titanic director James Cameron claims to have found the tomb of Christ with bone box inscribed with his name and the names of Mary and a Son named Judah. Is this an amazing breakthrough in biblical archeology? Something that will shake all of Christendom to its foundations? Or is this something we have seen before? These new understandings and breakthroughs are nothing new. St. Paul knew about similar attacks on Jesus and the Christian faith. In today's Second Lesson he wrote: As I have often told you before and now say again even with tears, many live as enemies of the cross of Christ. We know that Paul wrote about people who were teaching many strange things about Jesus- the same kinds of things we see on the news today. This is nothing new. There are enemies of the cross of Christ, and they seek to undermine the cross of Christ. God's encouragement this morning is to stand firm against the enemies of the cross. You must or else. You can through Christ.

Luke 4:20-32 The Message of Jesus Offends Because it is the Truth

“You don't want to hear this, but..” You ever hear that expression? “You don't want to hear this, but you're not getting a pony for Christmas. You don't want to hear this, but Tommy, that boy you like, isn't going to ask you out. You don't want to hear this, but you have cancer and you have 3 weeks to live. ” The truth hurts sometimes, but if we care about the individual, it is necessary to tell them the truth. They need to hear it. Jesus had one sermon to preach to his hometown, and what did He preach? The truth. He preached that He was the promised Messiah. The message of Jesus IS Jesus. His message opened our eyes to our sin and opened our eyes to Him as the only Savior from sin. Today we see the reaction of that message. We see that the message of Jesus offends because it is the truth. To people who had selfish expectations of Jesus, Jesus speaks the truth. He exposed selfish expectation. To people who had a different purpose for the Messiah than God, Jesus speaks the truth and reveals the true purpose of the Messiah.
